Jack in @ Shimmering West

JACK IN was a site specific audiovisual projection installation onto the facade of the Adelaide College of the Arts during Fringe 2012. The project involved custom printed screen surface and creating projection loops that reflected the site, training AC Arts and Uni SA students to work as crew to support public plug and play, and offering public workshops in techniques related to projection art as public art.

This blog reflects the making of the installation, created in a partnership between Adelaide College of the Arts, and the Illuminart multimedia artists. The project was supported by the Helpmann Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts and Visual Com.

Thanks from JACK IN

Thank you to everyone at AC Arts for your assistance during the prep, set up, and running of JACK IN.

We have extra special thanks to Paul Pearce, for your generous assistance in allowing us to use the workshop for building (and fixing) elements of the JACK IN booth, to Casey and your students for letting us use the design room on various occasions as a bit of a base and storage spot, Nicole and Janice for those odd requests for printing and “stuff”, Dush and Chris for ladders, sausage sandwiches, and late night security, and to everyone who spread the word to students and to people further afield. BIG thanks to our JACK IN crew, we loved working with you and look forward to the next time!

Workshops during JACK IN

Over the three weeks that Jack in ran, there were a number of workshops held by invited guest artists and the illuminart team. The focus was on providing extra-curricular training to AC Arts participants who were working as Jack in crew, and networking them with potential collaborators outside of the college. Some photos of the Resolume workshop:

Workshop topics:

  • The basics of VJ software demoed by Levon Hudson using Resolume.
  • Laser tag demoed by Rowan Lee using GRL open source laser tag software.
  • VJ Jamming – led by Cindi Drennan, special guests VJ Zoo (Perth WA)
  • Triple Head Matrox techniques led by Cindi Drennan (Illuminart).
  • AV Content led by Cindi Drennan (Illuminart).
  • Projection Mapping. Weds 7th March led by Cindi Drennan.

Guest presenters also gave demonstrations of work onto the Jack in installation. Below is a video of the interactive piano creation by Bob Jarvis (zealousy) after his Ableton live workshop.

Photos of JACK IN

Every night at JACK IN there was a different audience there to check it out, try it out or jam. Some nights were quiet and others had a queue. Photos from various evenings throughout the Fringe 2012 season.

JACK IN opening night

Here’s video of JACK IN on opening night on the 24th Feb. Rowan Lee (JACK IN crew & AC Arts student) demos laser tag, and visitors bring in their own videos to share.

JACK IN now running @ SHIMMERING WEST

During the 2012 Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide College of Arts building will be transformed with an interactive projection concept, created by students working with Illuminart (a South Australian media arts company).

How do you JACK IN???

Bring your laptop with your content to share to JACK IN between 8PM – 11PM during Fringe 2012.

Look for the JACK IN Booth at Shimmering West, Light Square (see the map below). At the booth the JACK IN crew person will help you jack in.

Where to JACK IN

There is a VGA cable for your video output and an audio cable for audio output (if needed). Your computer may need an adaptor (for example if it is a mac laptop). We have a range at the booth but we recommend you bring your own adaptors you normally use to adapt to VGA.

How to JACK IN The material you bring to share should be your own original material or with permission to use it. Please also consider the public nature of the JACK IN space and don’t show anything that will get you or us into trouble. You can jack in as long as you like but don’t hog it if other people want to use it.

FAQs:

What do I need?
Your laptop with some content or application you want to show.
If you have a non-vga video port, it is a good idea to bring an adaptor (we have some but can’t guarantee to have every kind available!)

When can I jack in? Between 8PM – 11PM any night during Adelaide Fringe 2012… Feb 24 to March 18th.

Who’s there?
A JACK IN crew member is there to help you jack in between 8PM – 11PM (may finish earlier or later depending on how busy the night is) and audience, especially if you invite friends. Tell us when you are showing up and we’ll come and watch!

What can I show?
Yes, you can show photos, videos, short films, you can play a computer game, set up photo booth or play something off the internet. You can scribble with “paint” or photoshop. You can set up a live camera feed from your webcam.
It’s up to you… do you have photos you’d like to see “building sized”? Have you made animations or films? Do you have a favourite video game? Got a video on vimeo or youtube?  Great… come and share it with us, invite your friends and blow it up big.

Anything audiovisual is ok provided its suitable for presentation in a public space – so please – nothing violent or extreme that’s going to land you (and us) in trouble AND you should have permission or copyright ownership of anything you screen.

Sound and music? Yes there is an audio Jack in, and you can just play some music without video if you want to.

What formats will work?
If you have a video port on your laptop, you can output standard VGA (1024×768) and
this is perfect for us to connect and switch to.

What about super wide images, like the JACK IN rolling animations?
If you want to try having one very very wide image across the building, this is the advanced option, you will need to build some custom content (3072×768) and install the matrox drivers prior to visiting, and JACK IN using the matrox system on site.

Can more than one person JACK IN? Yes, it’s a little more complicated but up to three people can play at one time. If you decide to do it, take some photos so we can see how cool that looks!

What’s that picture we’re projecting onto? The silver balcony is like a mirror and doesn’t work for projection, so with the help of VisualCom we have been able to cover it with a massive artwork created in collaboration between Illuminart and students of AC Arts (especially Liesbeth Pockett). This original concept involves a DAYTIME artwork of a giant student’s art journal and sketches of the building’s windows that at night is transformed with animation and mapped projection… and your contribution too!

Jack-In-Stallation

Jack In’s already starting to take shape… last night our projection tests using the projection framework were successful and this morning the large banner (printed by project partner Visualcom) was being installed onto the facade of the building as we arrived.

The 16m wide projection screen has a printed design, that repeats the shapes of the windows underneath (and will be used for projection mapping) and a visual design that suggests a large artist’s journal unfolding…

We’re looking forward to seeing how this enormous artistic projection screen will be brought to life by animation, photos, images, films and sounds… what will you bring to JACK IN?

Template for featured animations at JACK IN

So if you have been wondering if its possible to create animation for the 16m wide screen at Jack In.. the answer is YES, of course!

The featured animations loop nightly when there’s no-one actually jacked in. Each time someone contributes an animation we add it and extend the loop.

Attached to this post are the two template files we have used for our mapped animation. You can use it to create your own mapping, or to simply colourise the existing screen.

The precise size of your animation in pixels will be exactly the same as these files –  3072 x 768. Build your animation at 25 frames per second, 72dpi square pixels of course and use a codec such as motion jpeg A at 75%.

Send your animation to jackin [at] illuminart.com.au via yousendit or dropbox or drop it in to one of the Jack In crew on a USB stick …and it will be added to the widescreen loop that is playing by default on the wall.

Ideas? Well, the banner represents a giant scale artist’s journal, and the rectangles are a drawn continuation of the windows on the building below. Our own animations are drawn from suggestions and contributions made by various students, as well as some random stuff… so it could be a mix of a student’s daydreams while in class, through to a landscape of your own imagination that uses the window shapes as doors or portals. Go for it…

Right click these and save to download the master template files.
